Life has a way of leading us to unexpected places. My story, From Holland to Tanzania is one of adventure, resilience, and a few cultural surprises along the way. It all started with a family safari in 2008, an experience so incredible that I knew I had to return. Even though I had already been to Kenya, Tanzania stole my heart. I wanted more—more wildlife, more adventure, and more of that untamed African beauty.
A Leap of Faith
Fast forward to 2018. Freshly divorced and ready for a new chapter, I packed my bags and moved from Holland to Tanzania. Simple, right? Well, not quite. Life here is beautiful, but it’s not always easy. I’ve faced more challenges than I can count, but as they say, “the persistent one wins in the end.” And stubbornness? That’s practically my middle name.
Adjusting to a New Life
Tanzania has given me so much—breathtaking landscapes, incredible people, and a new sense of purpose. But let’s be honest, there are things I miss from Holland. First, drop—that glorious black candy that no one here seems to understand. And cheese. Real, rich, proper cheese. What I don’t miss? The weather. Rainy, cold, grey Dutch days? No, thank you. Though I must admit, spending Christmas in the heat still feels strange. Then again, hardly anyone here celebrates it, so I guess that solves the problem.
Cultural Surprises
New Year’s Eve? Now that’s a different experience altogether. Back home, we’d pop champagne and make a big deal of midnight. In Tanzania? You sit with friends, the clock strikes twelve, and… nothing. No cheers, no fireworks, just quiet contemplation. Then, the next day, your phone explodes with messages wishing you a Happy New Year. A bit of a delayed reaction, but hey, it works!
The Birth of eSafari Africa
Falling in love with Tanzania’s beauty wasn’t enough—I wanted to share it with others. That’s how eSafari Africa was born. I wanted to create tailor-made safaris, making sure travelers could experience the magic of Africa in a way that suits them best. From luxury getaways to budget-friendly adventures, we make it happen. Seeing our guests light up when they witness a lion in the wild or a breathtaking Serengeti sunset makes all the hard work worth it.
Making a Difference
Beyond travel, I wanted to give back. Helping single mothers in Tanzania became a mission close to my heart. Instead of simply offering financial aid, I focus on providing opportunities—helping them start small businesses or access education. It’s about empowering people to build better futures for themselves and their families. This work adds another layer of meaning to my journey and reminds me why I love this country so much.
The Journey in Tanzania Continues
My journey is far from over. Every day brings new experiences, challenges, and joys. If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting Africa, I encourage you to take that leap. Who knows? You might find your own journey waiting for you here.
I have found my purpose, my passion, and my home. What adventure is calling you?
Your first Safari, what to expect —There’s a moment on your first safari when the savannah opens up before you. The light is golden, the air smells of dust and acacia, and in the distance, a giraffe raises its head to greet the morning sun. That’s when you realize: you’re really here. Welcome to your first safari!
Your journey will likely begin in Arusha, a friendly town nestled at the foot of Mount Meru. From there, the adventure begins—driving past banana farms, waving children, and dusty roadside stalls selling mangos and chapati.
And then, the wild!
Game drives are at the heart of every safari. You’ll wake before sunrise (coffee or tea in hand), wrapped in a blanket in your safari jeep, ready to track lions, elephants, and graceful antelope. The early mornings bring life—herds on the move, big cats still hunting, and the air buzzing with birdsong.
Expect surprises. A leopard resting in a tree. A thousand wildebeest on the move. A curious elephant stopping just meters from your vehicle. No two safaris are the same, and that’s the magic.
At night, your tented camp or lodge becomes your sanctuary. You’ll hear the distant calls of hyenas or the gentle laugh of hippos in the dark. Over dinner by firelight, stories are shared, laughter echoes, and the sky explodes with stars.
You won’t have WiFi all the time—but you’ll have connection. To nature, to wonder, and to yourself.
So what should you expect on your first safari? Expect the unexpected. And expect to fall in love—with Africa, with the wild, and with moments that will live in your heart forever.
Meeting the Locals & Staying Aware
One of the most beautiful parts of your safari journey is the people you’ll meet along the way. Tanzanians are warm, welcoming, and proud to share their country with you. From your safari guide to the smiling vendor at a roadside fruit stand, don’t be surprised if you’re greeted with a heartfelt “Karibu sana!” (You’re very welcome).
While the atmosphere is generally safe and peaceful, it’s wise—just like anywhere else in the world—to take care of your belongings. Keep your valuables like passports, cash, and electronics secure, especially in public places or busy markets. Use the safe in your lodge if one is provided, and avoid flashing expensive items unnecessarily.
🛖 Visiting the Maasai
Many travelers are especially drawn to the fascinating culture of the Maasai people. Recognizable by their colorful shukas (cloth wraps), intricate jewelry, and tall posture, the Maasai are one of East Africa’s most iconic tribes. A visit to a Maasai boma (village) can be a truly eye-opening and respectful cultural experience—one where you’ll learn about their traditions, dance, lifestyle, and deep connection to the land.
Always ask permission before taking photos, and remember that these are real people—not a tourist show. Buying handmade jewelry or souvenirs is a lovely way to support the community directly.
Imagine waking up on the pristine beaches of Zanzibar. Turquoise waters gently lap the shore. You dream of adventure. Then, you realise a safari from Zanzibar is within reach. Indeed, it’s a unique opportunity. You can seamlessly transition from island paradise to the African wilderness.
Furthermore, several options exist. Firstly, flights connect Zanzibar to almost every Tanzanian national park. Secondly, flights also go directly to Arusha. This makes a safari from Zanzibar incredibly accessible. You can easily reach the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or Tarangire.
However, consider another route. Alternatively, take the ferry to Dar es Salaam. Consequently, you can travel by car. For instance, Mikumi National Park is relatively close. Moreover, Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) is also within reach. This allows for a different kind of safari from Zanzibar.
Your perfect Tanzanian safari, tailored to your budget and time. Join our affordable 4-6 day group safaris from Arusha, or design a custom private safari from Arusha or Dar es Salaam. We handle all the logistics, including fly-in/fly-out options. From Dar es Salaam, our 5-day Mikumi and Nyerere safari is a fantastic, budget-friendly choice with amazing wildlife. While Ruaha and Serengeti are best reached by air, we can arrange short 2 to 3 day trips from Zanzibar.
Therefore, whether you choose to fly or travel by land and sea, a safari from Zanzibar is a fantastic choice. Specifically, it offers diverse experiences. For example, you can combine a beach holiday with wildlife viewing. Ultimately, a safari from Zanzibar will create lasting memories. It is an unforgettable adventure.
