History

Dar es Salaam, meaning “Haven of Peace” in Arabic, has a rich and diverse history. Initially, it was a small fishing village. The local Swahili-speaking population called it Mzizima. In the late 19th century, the Sultan of Zanzibar established a trading post here. This leaded to its growth as a major port city.

During German colonial rule in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Dar es Salaam became the capital of German East Africa. Then, the Germans developed the city’s infrastructure, including railways and administrative buildings. After World War I, Dar es Salaam became the administrative center of British Tanganyika. Under British rule, the city continued to grow and modernize. This attracted people from various ethnic backgrounds. The city became a melting pot of cultures.

In 1961 Tanganyika gained independence from Britain. Finally Dar es Salaam became the capital of the new formed nation. It remained the capital when Tanganyika merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania in 1964.

In the present day, Dar es Salaam stands as the largest city in Tanzania. It functions as both its economic and cultural center.
