Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park, located south of the vast open grass plains of southern Maasailand, covers 2,600 square kilometers of grassland, floodplains, and extensive acacia woodland. Its pristine beauty is highlighted by expansive views of distant volcanic mountain ranges, painted in various shades of purple, along the drive.
Tarangire National Park boasts dense bush areas with tall grasses and ancient baobab trees, contrasting with Manyara’s lush forests. The terrain is undulating, dominated by the magnificent Tarangire River valley. During the dry months, especially from July to September, this valley draws migrant animals, creating wildlife concentrations similar to Ngorongoro Crater.
Tarangire National Park is a hidden gem on the northern circuit, often overshadowed by Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. However, it surprises with vast animal concentrations and fewer visitors, especially from July to October. Safaris here offer exceptional experiences with unique habitats. The park’s size ensures a tranquil game viewing environment, especially in the serene south. Overall, Tarangire offers excellent value and is perfect for a secluded getaway.

Wildlife in Tarangire National Park
During the dry months, animal concentrations around the Tarangire River rival those of the Ngorongoro Crater, providing diverse and reliable sightings. The ecosystem is influenced by a localized migration pattern followed by most game in and around the park. Elephants are prominent, with up to 3,000 roaming during peak months. Peak season also sees good numbers of wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, Thompson’s gazelle, greater and lesser kudu, eland, leopard, and cheetah. Rare sightings include dwarf mongoose, oryx, and gerenuk. Tarangire is renowned for premier birding.
Activities
Tarangire safaris are the main activity, followed by ranger-led hikes. Opting to stay outside the park opens up the possibility of engaging in night safaris.
When to visit Tarangire National Park
Game viewing is exceptional from July to October. During the rest of the year, most game migrates out of the park. They head to the Rift Valley floor and the Masai steppe for grazing. Consequently, visitors should not expect high game concentrations during the off-season. Nonetheless, we recommend visiting for those seeking to avoid crowds.
