Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe Stream National Park lies in the westernmost part of Tanzania, nestled along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Despite its small size, covering just 14 square miles (35 sq km), it holds the distinction of being both the smallest national park in Tanzania and in most of Africa.

The park boasts a remarkable diversity of landscapes, including grasslands, woodlands, steep valleys, and tropical rainforest, surprising for its compact size. Furthermore, the area where the monkeys and primates reside is characterised by dense jungle, evoking a true Tarzan-like setting.

Moreover, renowned as the site of Jane Goodall’s pioneering research with chimpanzees and other primates, Gombe Stream National Park holds immense scientific value. Beginning her studies here in 1960, Goodall’s observations have greatly contributed to our understanding of primate behaviors and communication.

Chimpanzees are the park’s main draw. Furthermore it’s also home to a variety of other primates, including blue monkeys, olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and vervet monkeys. Additionally, boasting one of Africa’s highest concentrations of primates, it offers an unparalleled opportunity for primate enthusiasts.

Moreover, birdwatchers can delight in spotting approximately 200 species of birds within the park. Furthermore, the park is inhabited by a range of other wildlife, such as bush pigs, hippopotami, various snakes, small antelope, and leopards, which are key predators of the chimpanzees and their primate counterparts.

“If we look straight and deep into a chimpanzee’s eyes, an intelligent self-assured personality looks back at us. If they are animals, what must we be?”
